Biography: Coach Doug Blevins journey to the National Football League, and a career in professional football, could certainly be characterized as non-conventional. Coach Blevins was born with cerebral palsy, which has prevented him from ever being able to walk, and live his life the way most people without disabilities do. However, cerebral palsy has not prevented Coach Blevins from becoming the premiere professional Kicking Coach in all of college and professional football! Coach Blevins often tells his audiences across the country that the ironic thing about his life is the fact that “I often find myself reflecting on the fact that I am a 48-year old man who cannot tie my own shoes without assistance, however I can teach a young man how to step onto the football field, on the world stage, and kick a 48-yard field goal to win the Super Bowl!”
Despite having a physical disability which would be thought of as something that would preclude anyone from a career in professional sports, Coach Blevins has personally coached and developed some of the very best kickers and punters in National Football League history! During his professional football career, he has either coached, or developed over 27-kickers and punters who have played professional football!
Coach Blevins began his football career serving as a Student Assistant Football Coach at Abingdon High School. He successfully earned a college football scholarship and went onto serve as a Student Assistant Football Coach at the University of Tennessee under Head Coach, Johnny Majors. He has also coached college football at East Tennessee State University, and Emory & Henry College. He is actually currently serving as the Special Teams Coordinator at Emory & Henry College.
He broke into the National Football League in 1994, as the Kicking Consultant for the New York Jets under Head Coach, Pete Carroll. At the conclusion of the 1994 NFL season he was hired by the National Football League to serve as the Kicking Coordinator for the NFL Europe League, which was called the World League
of American Football at that time. He served in that capacity for 5-years, actually living in Europe several months a year. During this same time period, Coach Blevins served as the Kicking Consultant for the New England Patriots, and served as the Kicking Coach for the Miami Dolphins for 6-NFL seasons under Head Coach, Jimmy Johnson. During the 2001 Arena Football League season he served as the Special Teams Coordinator for the Florida Bobcats. During the 2004 NFL season he worked for the Minnesota Vikings.
